Portugal is het westelijkste land van continentaal Europa. Het beslaat omstreeks 16 procent van het Iberisch Schiereiland. Spanje is Portugals enige buurland. Portugal is een onmiskenbaar maritiem land, met een lange Atlantische kust.
Tot Portugal behoren tevens de eilandengroep de Azoren en het eiland Madeira, met de eilandengroep van de Ilhas Selvagens, alle gelegen in de Atlantische Oceaan. Sinds 1986 behoort het land tot de Europese Unie.
